11th Grade Language Arts - Ellsworth, KS

INTO THIN AIR
This unit introduced a non-fiction novel to 11th grade students. There was a large amount of emphasis on research associated with this novel. In addition to reading and learning about the events in the book, students researched information about the expense of the trip, the health concerns developed after climbing the mountain, and potential for PTSD for many of the survivors. ABOUT ME MEMORY BOOK
This project is worked on by students throughout the year. Each chapter is a different stage in their life. For each chapter, there is a different writing focus. For example, we may discuss the importance of using strong verbs and that often there is an overusage of linking verbs. The requirment for the chapter is to only have 3 linking verbs. This can be very challenging at first and students learn about the importance of verbs. We bound the book and as a surprise to the student, we had a favorite teacher write an individual letter to the student. Click the below buttons for examples of chapter lesson requirements.
